Cream of the musical crop
"Need help spicing up your child's music repertoire?
The Pokey Pup (pokeypup.com) is like having a friendly independent record store in your own home. The creation of Bryan Townsend, a music industry vet and owner of Underdog Records in Atlanta, The Pokey Pup offers CDs in a variety of genres, hand picked for quality. The father of a 1-year-old son, Townsend found that there was a wealth of music and entertainment for kids but not all of it is good. He's developed an impressive catalog of nearly 1,000 CDs, DVDs and books. The site has featured picks (two great ones right now: Ben Rudnick & Friends' Grace's Bell or Park Slope Parents: The Album) and also categorizes music by age-appropriateness. A nice touch: the site also suggests good music picks for adults."

No more annoying kids music. Now your child can rock, or swing to country, with you
"A new online store offers salvation for parents who would rather listen to a garbage truck backing up than one more shrill refrain from the mouth of a cartoon character.
The Pokey Pup, an Atlanta-based virtual store that ships to Canada, is selling "alternative" children's music and DVDs ranging from rock and bluegrass to classical and country. The online shop also offers a selection of grown-up fare deemed family-friendly, from contemporary indie-rock darlings like Arcade Fire to Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley and The Beatles.
"You can only listen to The Wheels on the Bus so many times without it driving you crazy," says founder Bryan Townsend, 34.
It's the latest example of how Generation X (variously defined to include those born between the mid-1960s and late-'70s) is re-shaping parenting. >From sexy nursing bras to pint-sized Ramones T-shirts and trendy baby carriers for carting offspring from concert hall to art gallery, its preferences indicate Gen-Xers refuse to stop being themselves just because they've become parents..."
